Financial Frameworks and Forecasting for Legal Aid Nonprofit

Dare to Change worked with the South Asian Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) during its startup stage to build the financial infrastructure necessary to move from organizational vision to sustainable operations. As an emerging nonprofit, SALDF needed a clearer understanding of what it would actually cost to staff, operate, and grow the organization, not only in its first year, but as its programs and institutional needs expanded. DTC developed operational budgets and financial forecasts that connected staffing, programming, administrative expenses, professional services, and organizational infrastructure with anticipated revenue requirements. This gave SALDF leadership a stronger framework for evaluating growth decisions, understanding the financial implications of new programs or hires, and identifying the level of funding required to sustain planned activities over time. The engagement helped establish financial planning as a core part of SALDF’s organizational development. By mapping costs against projected growth and future revenue needs, DTC strengthened the organization’s readiness for fundraising, grant development, Board oversight, and institutional investment while providing leadership with a more realistic foundation for scaling beyond the startup phase.
