Supporting Board and Governance Pivots
DTC worked with APNA to assess the role of the Board beyond basic compliance and governance requirements. The strategy examined Board composition, leadership needs, desired member profiles, governance responsibilities, strategic expertise, fundraising capacity, organizational oversight, community representation, and future recruitment priorities. This helped APNA identify the types of experience, networks, and perspectives needed around the table as the organization’s programs, public funding, partnerships, and institutional responsibilities continue to expand.
DTC also helped define a clearer Board recruitment and development framework, including the characteristics and expertise APNA should prioritize in prospective members and how Board roles should connect to broader organizational goals. The work positioned recruitment as a strategic process tied to the organization’s future needs in areas such as fundraising, finance, government, nonprofit management, community engagement, legal expertise, partnerships, and organizational growth.
The result was a stronger governance framework that treats the Board as an active part of APNA’s institutional infrastructure. By connecting governance, leadership, accountability, fundraising, community voice, and strategic growth, DTC helped APNA build a Board model designed to support stronger oversight while also contributing to the organization’s long term capacity and sustainability.
